Railway lunacy

  • Vali Jamal

See 'em coolies working on the railway, the bwanas relaxing, the Africans wondering at the lunacy of it? Around 40 thousand Indians came to build the railway, 3,000 died, 4000 were invalidaded home, 7000 elected to stay on in East Africa, mostly to run the Lunatic Express. Once done Indian traders began to trickle in to take trade into the interior. Idi Amin Dada said, the railway is now built, the Indians should go home. And he sent us packing.
Do you see Mr Realx Singh there? Haha.

  • Vali Jamal Sometimes a tyop can be useful: both Mr Relax Singh and Realx Singh are in the pitcha. Spot 'em! They and other Punjabis built the Uganda Railway and I take my, ahem, turban off to them.

  • Vali Jamal How 'bout Mr Uganda Railway Cross Singh? Our signs used to say "Level Crossing."

'There was always something very special about East African Asians, going out to the deep to open up their little dukas all over. We lived not far from the chado - and then we were expelled and many of us never returned. That's why we want to tell that story.' (VIVJ)
